Your wedding wardrobe photos are something you’ll look back on forever as the
As a photographer, part of my job is looking for new and creative ways to get clients photos they’re in love with. I constantly joke with my husband, Dewey, that scrolling photography educator’s TikTok accounts has become a part time job for me.
I want to know about what’s new in gear, props, and backdrops. And I looove playing around with the fun hacks and experimenting with untraditional camera settings.
I’ve experimented with prisms, colored cellophane, and smoke machines. All in pursuit of those oh-my-god photos that make you happy you decided to get creative in the first place.
What’s so cool about my most recent discovery is that it’s both cheaper and simpler than all of those things and I feel like no one is talking about it!
The magical discovery?
Command hooks are such a gift because they are super versatile, totally removable, and only cost like 6 bucks.
They’ve been allowing me to get dress and tux shots in places that would have previously been impossible. Like in front of scenic windows, above gorgeous fireplaces, & blended in with gallery walls.
I no longer need to take the same shot of a dress hanging from a door at every wedding. This has allowed my creativity with these shots to explode.
In fact, after I photographed my last wedding, I vowed to take these with me everywhere.
If the rooms you are getting read in are too dimly lit, I can get creative with where I take wardrobe photos. I’ll often place a command hook right above a window to hang lace dresses from. This allows natural light to come through and the outdoors can be seen in the image too.
I usually play around with the windows inside the venue or find a clean, dry, scenic place outside to get creative.
The bottom line is this: I’m no longer battling to get the perfectly lit shot, I can go and proactively find the light I’m after. SCORE.
Next up, backdrops! Whether I’m hanging a wedding dress in front of a scenic window or a tux above a fireplace, I’m getting more creative shots of your wardrobe than ever before. This allows you to look back on these once-in-a-lifetime pieces and feel transported back to when you wore them.
Instead of taking the same wardrobe pictures with boring backgrounds, I can often implement better textures, colors, and lighting if I take time to play around with the placement of the hooks.
My absolute favorite part of this command-hook hack is that it allows me to integrate your venue into these photos. Before, I was often taking these photos of the garments laying flat or hanging from a door. Now, I can walk around your venue, or wherever you’re getting ready, and blend it right into the shot.
These photos make for such a stunning addition to your gallery because they show off the elements of your day that made it specific to you, including your venue.
Another great thing about command hooks is they don’t leave any residue or markings. So you can be sure to leave all property looking totally untouched. We often think of “leave no trace” as being a phrase that applies to the great outdoors. But wedding venues are also soo appreciative of guests who are kind to their space.
*Just be sure to read the directions on the back of the package to make sure you’re placing and removing them correctly if you decide to try this hack out yourself.
You are totally going to look like a million bucks, and while you can post it for the world to see, the purpose of these photos is to remind you of the magical day you committed to be ride-or-dies.
Our clothing is such an important part of how we choose to express ourselves, so I love taking time to get these shots juuuust right for my clients. Command hooks have become my go-to simple hack for this reason.
I’m currently booking 2024 weddings in Denver, Colorado (& wherever the hell you’d like me to tell your story.)
Let’s make sure I’m the perfect photographer for your day. We’ll hop on a call to chat about all the deets. You can reach out to book me through my contact form.
