If you were under the impression weddings had to be black tie affairs, this “queer disco cowboy” wedding is going to make you rethink that idea entirely.
It also reminds me of my golden rule: Do whatever the fuck you want to on your day. No compromising.
You get to decide if that means embracing every last tradition & cliche or if you want to go totally rogue and create a theme that’s one-of-a-kind.
And that’s exactly what Allycia and David did for their Port Townsend wedding.
Their entire day was filled with the most intentional details that were sooo them.
And they did such a good job of making sure every last detail fit this theme. (Which obviously made me so happy because their photos flow so well together.)
Here’s exactly what made this wedding so perfect:
Obviously, we can’t overlook the magic that is this theme. Keep “Queer Disco Cowboy” in mind as you read through & see their photos. I mean, come on… they absolutely nailed it.
Of course they had the basics, like cowboy boots and disco balls, but that’s just the start of it.
David sported a flower bolo tie and Allycia had flower acrylic nails. Their wedding party wore bright pink dresses and the sharpest cowboy attire.
Allycia and David thrifted so many of the decorations and favors for their day. They thrifted coffee mugs to give out as party favors. They also thrifted a bunch of different vintage plates that made for the most fun, eclectic dinnerware. And the candles were TO.DIE.FOR. Not only is thrifting such a sustainable way to host a wedding, it can also save you $$$ on what is traditionally very expensive.
I also love thrifting details because it guarantees you won’t have a cookie cutter wedding. And choosing unconventional materials means your pics will be fun and true-to-you. Plus, tons of things at thrift stores are vintage so there’s often more options there that you can’t find at Amazon or Target.
They had flower boys handing out roses at their ceremony. This made all of their guests laugh and was such a fun twist on tradition. I encourage my clients to think about how they want to modernize the traditional (& often outdated) wedding party. Who do YOU want to include and how can you honor their gender identity in the process?
Or maybe we begin with asking: “Why not have flower boys?”
The flowers were so beautiful, you’d think a pro did them. But instead Allycia used her creative talent mixed with some Pinterest inspo to create these insane bouquets. I always love it when clients get creative. It adds a personal touch to your wedding (and in this case, gives you total bragging rights.) Plus with TikTok and Pinterest to help, the sky’s the limit with what you can DIY these days.
What better way to end your wedding day than with a smoke sesh with your favorite people? When the sun started to set, we all snuck away to capture some 420 pics. While everyone was smoking, I couldn’t help but think about how cool weddings have become. You really don’t have to stick to the status quo. (It makes for the most fun photos.)
This smoke sesh made for a great addition to their photos gallery.
And of course the rolling papers with fruity and pink cow print to fit the theme.
If you have a personal story, narrative, or inside joke you love: you gotta include it on your big day. Allycia broke her back during the ice storm of 2022. She has the best sense of humor though so they had custom matchbooks and a cute banner that said “Broken Back Mountain” at wedding. This also pays homage to their gay cowboy theme, because Broke Back Mountain is a movie about two cowboys who fall in love.
I told you they were amazing at themes.
I’m so excited with how the film rolls for this wedding turned out. The nostalgic grainy vibes bring the theme to life in a whole new way. You can really see how The Port Townsend Fairgrounds created the perfect backdrop for their photos and was such an incredible place for them to celebrate.
