Meet Anaya (he/him) and Ava (she/him/they). They had an unconventional Denver wedding, because they do things the way they wanna do things.
And to say I am HERE. FOR. IT. would be a massive understatement.
They know who they are and sprinkled their personalities into all the details of their wedding.
Anaya and Ava got married at Town Hall Collaborative, which, contrary to its name, has nothing to do with Town Hall, and is actually a really cool bar in downtown Denver.
But before we dive into their incredible wedding, let’s talk about their love story…
When Ava and Anaya first met, Ava shared that they love to bake.
Anaya asked Ava what she bakes. “Biscuits,” was her response.
And it was instant love.
So needless to say, they are destined for eachother– the best love stories truly do start over a shared love of carbs.
Defining a wardrobe and inviting your guests to participate ensures your wedding has the visual look you were envisioning. Ava and Anaya brought allll the moody vibes, by asking their guests to wear all black.
Plus– who wouldn’t want to be invited to a wedding with an all black dress code? Is it just the punk girl in me? … Or is that the easiest thing ever?
The idea was to create a moody, nighttime feel. And let’s be honest– it fits perfectly with their Gomez and Morticia Addams vibe.
PRO TIP: Ask your guests to follow a specific color palette for their attire. A limited, intentional palette helps ensure your final photo gallery looks cohesive.
The perfect blend of casual and classy– serving your guests the most high-end caviar for cocktail hour, followed up by delicious cheesy pizzas to-go from Little Caesars.
I can attest that this magical combination kept their guests full, happy, and energized for the dance floor. And I have so many fun pictures to prove it.
And instead embraced their vibe– which is edgy, moody, and fun.
The perfect example of this being the cool “Til Death” signage they had throughout the venue.
Your wedding doesn’t need to be a black-tie event, with 200+ guests, a dozen traditions you don’t care about, or decorations you think are overkill.
Ava and Anaya’s wedding felt like a cool party with the best 50+ people you know. It was laid-back, spectacular, and true-to-them.
Honesty hour: you have to be intentional if you want to make sure your day really speaks to your idea of a good time. Have a conversation with your partner about what that means to you ahead of time.
If you think pink peonies are too basic or the bouquet toss is too tacky, ditch it.
On the contrary if it’s your biggest dream to live in a house made of pink peonies and you daydream about it being “your turn” to toss the bouquet, prioritize that shit.
This day is about you two. Ditch what doesn’t work for you and soak up the rest.
You can completely write your own rule book for your wedding day. No one checks.
So instead of a flower girl, Ava and Anaya’s good friend, Jess (they/them) walked down the aisle handing out hard seltzers to guests before the ceremony.
It was iconic. And yet another great example of altering a tradition to make it fit your vibe.
Fun little tip– Guests love a surprise! How can you shake up a tradition or add in fun details to keep guests excited?
There is nothing basic about Anaya and Ava. And I mean nothing. Before their reception they changed into fresh, new fits:
Ava wore a gorgeous jeweled corset with black pants and Anaya sported a slick jacket with sneakers.
These casual outfits worked super well with their venue and suited them so well for a night of drinking and dancing.
Unconventional weddings are rooted in intentionality, personality, and HONESTY. You have to sit down with your partner and really get to the core of what’s needed to make this milestone incredible for you.
